I agree with C. Green, I'm a bit wary of answering too as everyone has their own individual opinion of where is nicer to live.

I live in Colchester in Essex. Yes it's a garrison town and yes Essex is supposedly notorious for slappers and chavs but it's really just an overexaggerated stereotype and I'd have to seriously disagree with it.

Everywhere has stereotypes, I see a lot of people saying that its grim up North, but in all honesty they couldn't be further from the truth. Its like everywhere, there's good bits and bad bits and a lot of regeneration going on (Manchester for example) that are making these places so much better to live.

I personally love where I live, as much as I want to travel the world, I know I'd still come back here and settle down because to me its home and its so comfortable and familiar and has so many memories. Some people might come here and think what a dump it is or something but its not special to them because they don't have the memories here that I do.

I haven't had much experience of anywhere further North than London, again nicer bits and some down right rotten bits, but at the end of the day you have to weigh up your own pro's and con's and whether you want to live in a town, a city or the countryside, whether you'll be able to get a job (lots of unemployment at the moment, me included!) and the prices you can afford to pay when you get there.

I love my country and it does have it faults, as does everywhere, but I wouldn't choose anywhere else for my home. So although I don't feel I can satisfactorily recommend one single place in the whole of the UK, I can say that I think its great that you're considering living here, as its a real compliment to our island that people think its good enough, you could choose anywhere but you're looking here.

To all the people who keep saying they want to keep foreigners out and that they're taking all the jobs etc, just think if you wanted to move to a different country how you'd feel if you got treated the same when you got there. Not very hospitable is it?

If Barrister Girl is going to criticise Middlesbrough she had better learn to spell it correctly in the first place.

If I was going to live anywhere in the UK it would be within walking distance of the North Yorkshire moors. North Yorkshire is by far the most beautiful place on earth. Middlesbrough is such a place - per head of population Middlesbrough has an 'average' crime rate, and inward investment has meant that a lot of the previously run down areas have either been demolished, or had millions spent to improve them. Employment is at the national average also. Barrister Girl was obviously reading from a 1980's census.

As a Londoner who lived in Yorkshire for many years, I moved up to Scotland a couple of years ago and love it.

The countryside is fantastic, the people are friendly - in shops and elsewhere you can get into a conversation with anyone, and one advantage for you would be that there is an established Italian Scots community.

If I were you, I'd try and stay a week or so in wherever I was thinking of moving, and decide beforehand whether you prefer the city, or the country, or some of both.

Then try and make contact with someone like yourself wherever you were thinking of going; ask them if it gives them what they need.

For me, Scotland is the greatest: I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Good luck! I hope you're happy wherever you end up.

Come to York!

It's a great city, for history, culture, theatre, shopping, nightlife, live music, sightseeing, eating out.... the list goes on.

Oh and there's reckoned to be a different pub for every day of the year!

The best thing about it is that it's a fairly small city, so it's much more welcoming than the big cities, and it's unique too. It still manages to have everything you need (see list above). And if you really feel the need to go out partying till dawn in a big city, Leeds is less than half an hour away on the train, and it costs less than a tenner to get there.

Also, if you did want to go to London every now and then the train there only takes 2 hours.

What more can I say? It's fantastic.

Hope the world doesn't now decide to move to York, but you can!

I would say manchester - not city centre though there are other nice places there.

Other than that I wouldn't bother coming over to this country as the people that already live here want to leave, the standard of living may be better than other countries but the cost of living is ridiculous and we pay too much tax and get nothing for it.

Personally I would move to Australia or somewhere like that if I could.

Although I have to agree with a previous answer. I would stay out of the Uk at the moment, Foreigners are receiving a lot of blame at the moment, from the murder of 5 prostitutes, to causing race hate crimes and rioting.

However, should you still decide to come, Wales has a high volume of Italian descendants, due to many POW camps being set up, during the War.

I personally like my city, of Chester, which has a popular night life culture, History dating over 2000 years and a superb public transport, that can take you to most places in the Uk.

Ely is nice as is Eyam (both are countryside). If you are wanting a little more upbeat but not too upbeat Harrogate is lovely. Margate is nice. Halifax is a nice area. I live in Sheffield but it's give or take if yiu will end up in a nice area here. York is beautiful and quite a lot of history there and aesthetically pleasing. Lincoln is lovely! The further North you go the cheaper the cost of living. check yiour budget for prices. www.vebra.com or www.rightmove.com will give you anestimate of prices .. other than that My tenant informed me yesterday that he is moving out of my 3 bedroomed house in Sheffield so there'll be a lovely one here where I am, with a nce cheap rent.. on a lighter note you may need to pay up to 6 mnths rent up front as you will not show on our credit berau and be classed as high risk. Take this into consideration before looking...

Hard to say as do not know anything about you! I lived in London (moved there from Portugal) in 1984 and stayed until 2001. I am now in Brighton by the sea. I think London is great but expensive. If you like variety, art. music, culture, lots of varied, well paid work, etc then it is a good place. Do not know if you want city life or country life or if you want to work and what sort of work as these are all important considerations. There are places I would like to live in the UK but I know there are hardly any jobs and I would not be able to do what I like so you need to think carefully.

Also the weather is major. The north is generally colder and wetter and the south a little warmer. Again it depends what you prefer and what you want to live with.

Give us more info and I'll suggest some places....

It depends entirely on what you are looking for. Is it just for you or do you have a family? Do you like courtyside or cities, do you have employment or a career?

I personally would love to live in the SW, Devon or Cornwall but, although the areas are beautiful, the crime rate is rising and there is a shortage of jobs due to the influx of outsiders. Steer very clear of London,Liverpool and Manchester, all crime ridden and with some horrible areas. I know, I grew up in London and know the other 2 well.

North of Scotland is cheap although it is cold and very wet.

Inverness or more Southern then Near Glasgow, East Kilbride or Hamilton,

but not in any City Centre failing that Cornwall, Dorset or South Wales

Depends what kinda lifestyle you want. Central Scotland (Stirling area) is quite good as you can have all the benefits of a semi rural/rural living area but be within a short commute of both Glasgow & edinburgh. Also housing tends to be much more expensive in the city so its cheaper to live out of a city area. Happy home hunting!!!!!!

I live in Bristol, but can recommend Devon, Dorset or Cornwall.

It depends what you are after, retirement, job, country life, city life etc.

Do you want to be close to beautful beaches? Nightlife? Rural pubs?

Be a bit more specific and you will probably get some more specific ideas, rather than people just suggesting their home towns!

I would move to another country. But i'd say go up north, the south is too expensive! Try cities like Manchester or Sheffeild. Liverpool i gather will be nice soon as it is seeing regeneration.

And i can't beleive the yahoo! answers team refered to britain as a small island. You should see my question about what some dumb yanks say and this is one of those things! Britain is the eighth largest island in the world! Its huge!

If you are going to live over here I would suggest London or home counties as a work /live base and then you can visit any part of the U.K from there in a few hours.

The best bits of the countryside are no place to earn a decent living, that's why they are not spoilt.

Why would you want to move here. Over taxed, crap weather 6 months a year and tied up in costly, (both in money and lives), wars in Iraq and Afganistan. Still, it'll probably get worse. The muslims will probably win the next election and throw out all the minority groups - like scots, christians and whites. I'll really be out being in all 3.

Depends what you're after in terms of lifestyle and what your line of work is. If you work in IT then somewhere within commuting distance of London or the M4 corridor (Reading etc). If you work in agriculture then anywhere... but don't expect to earn much.

If you're a city-dweller at heart then you'll miss that if you move to the country, if you're a carrot cruncher then London is definitely to be avoided.

I live in Kent and apart from the lack of well-paying jobs locally, it's great, but I'm biased :-)

LONDON

london is a great place - greatest city in the world.

We are home to people from every country in the world, evrey language and every culture. If you value diversity, than you cannot beat this city - you will experience every type of person god put on this earth.

Also getting work is very very easy, we of course have more jobs going than anywhere else, in whatever proffesion you want.

And of course we have the best nightlife, there are clubs all over the city - iyts not like other towns in england where all the places are all the same, and in the same place. Whatever youre into, whether its reggae, dance music, rap, salsa etc ect.. its readily available.

If you want a quiet life where everyone in your community thinks and acts the same, than stay away from london. If you want to experience life at its best - than come to london.

I guarantee this great city of mine, cannot be beaten.

i have in no way been to Canada, yet they're extra economically reliable than the U.S. immediately so i'd recommend residing there. yet in case you want to go back to u . s . of america, Brooklyn in NYC is effective. it truly is a safer area of the city and in strolling-distance of long island. it truly is intense priced even with the reality that.

London ... Crime ... its no worse than anywhere else .. don't believe what these people are saying .. stay away from areas (in any town, or city in the uk) that people tell you too every area has a no-go area .. not just London

Lenton - Police officer shot

I'm a bit wary of answering, everyone has loads of thumbs down, very confusing. We all have our own opinion of which is the best place to live but the best thing to do would be research each city/county that interests you & weigh up the pros & cons. I personally wouldn't want to live anywhere but Southampton, but that's because I've lived here my whole life & it's all I've known. Good luck

Well, London really is your first choice if you can afford it - there is nowhere quite like it! Failing that, anywhere in the west of Scotland where the scenery is beautiful, the people are friendly and the pubs are second to none! You will have to bring your rain gear though, as we get more rain here than anywhere else in the world, I think!

Why would you want to stay out of London

I live in Kent but it is on the out skirts of London (Sidcup) it is a very nice suburb and within easy reach of the train station which is 20 Min's to the City where there is lots of work and a good night life the people are very nice and friendly (like me) it has very diverse cultures and people it is very hard not to fit in in London

Gay, black, white or religion it is all a good mix and people get on very well

If you don't want to live in the city that is fine but there are some nice places out of town don't listen to people who have at most been to London on a day trip and know nothing about the people who live and work there!!

Move to Sidcup Kent I live there and that is reason enough!! ha ha ha

It all depends on your background, job skills and where you originally come from.

But I'd say to you, if you can afford to, move to Ireland (the Republic). The scenery is fantastic, the people are brilliant and welcoming and there is plenty of work (especially in I.T.-related fields). But Ireland is expensive nowadays.

didy says most brits want to leave britain, But what he doesn't tell you is that most of the people that leave, end up coming back to the UK, mostly b/c of the free healthcare system, and they also find out that its more hardwork in other countries.

Come to Wales, Maybe Cornwall. Or south England.

I doubt you will ever get to my message,

But i recomend Hampshire, it is probably one of the best county's to live in as there is a huge range of housing, you could easily live in the country or in a smallish city like Southampton or Winchester on the south coast!

It has housing to suit almost every budget ;)

You need to be more specific about your requirements, for such as small place the UK is very varied. Your employment needs may dictate an area where you would be more suited. You may like the hussle and bustle of town/city life, you may require the peace and tranquility of the home counties. Every area has pros and cons hence the need to be more specific.

Don't think about, just don't do it. It's cold, wet and windy. British people moan when it cold and they moan when it's hot, which is rare. They moan about the telly, they moan about everything, they just love moaning. And you don't want to become one of them.

Watch all the thumbs down now from all the moaners.
2006-12-12 10:29:58 UTC
Wow, so many answers to choose from!! Where do you start? I know I'm biased as are probably many of the responders but I have 2 areas to recommend! Firstly Devon in the South West. I'm from Exeter, a Cathedral and University city, very friendly, not too big but not so small that it's insular. Lots to do, lively atmosphere and the surrounding coastline (10 minute drive from the centre to the nearest bit of coast) is breathtaking. Lots of countryside to explore. Secondly, South Wales is where I've lived for 10 years, namely Swansea. I came to University here and stayed as I loved the easygoing and friendly attitude of the Welsh people. I've never ever experienced anti English behaviour that I was warned about (only during big rugby matches) but that's probably because I'm friendly and have respect for the locals! Swansea is also a University city so is lively and dynamic. The city is right on the coast- walk 3 minutes from the city centre and you find yourself on Swansea Marina, a lively and cosmopolitan area in its own right with the new Waterfront Museum having opened last year. My hubbie and I now live in the Gower Penninsula, an area of about 20 square miles to the West of Swansea. It was the first 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' in UK and it deserves its title as it's wild and beautiful, both during summer and during winter in different ways. Good luck with whichever area of Britain you choose. There are many places I've been but more that I've never visited but would love to in the future!
2006-12-12 14:45:58 UTC
Try somewhere like surrey it is just outside London but still allows easy access into london, cost of living is only very slightly cheaper and I mean very slightly but it is still a nice place to live because its not too quiet and there is still lots to do. hope it works out.

i would suggest Newcastle Upon Tyne!!!

so shopping is great.

i'd suggest glasgow : a moderately large city which has much lower house prices than in many other areas of the UK (a much smaller mortgage than if you lived in Edinburgh, Hull or anywhere else of comparable size). It would be easier to recommend somewhere if you said what your job was though.

What nationality are you? What sort of work do you want? What qualifications do you have?. Decide on your employment capabilities first. It is big change in your life to move to a new Country. If your a medical student N.H.S are currently recruiting Overseas and you get immediate council house. Oil Industry is also recruiting with same benefits. I would suggest Scotland as their is a lot more housing available and sad to say this if you stay away from Glasgow/ Edinburgh area, you will find your neighbours easy to live with. Hope this helps and Welcome if you do move :).

I have lived in Newcastle for 15 years and loved it (well, I should!). There are good night clubs, cheap pubs but you can't get a council house for love or money (thank Blair for that). The weather is cold thanks to a breeze from Sweden but apart from that we are happy bunnies!

Canterbury is a gorgeous place to live and is nicely placed between the Channel and London - close enough to both to be useful, but a lovely littel city in its own right. Everything you need, plus a lively and friendly atmosphere (and some nice architecture).

I'd agree with avoiding London, unless you are happy with the unrelenting hustle and bustle of city life.

There are some nice little villages out towards Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire which are peaceful but within train distance of London. Might be a little pricey though.

Cambridge and Oxford I'd also recommend as good places to see a bit of England and enjoy it, but with the same caveat that prices will be expensive.

Things will be cheaper further North, but away from the London city links, they tend to be a bit too quiet until you hit the Cities like Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh, all of which will be similarly noisy.

I'd still heartily recommend anywhere in Kent or on the South coast (from Tunbridge Wells, Dover, Herne Bay, Eastbourne, Brighton's good fun but very friendly) - with the possible exception of Margate... very tacky.

In short - go with the South East, all the loveliest and liveliest places are down there!

It completely depends on your lifestyle and more importnatly your budget. London is obviously the most expensive place to live as it has everything. I live in Essex which is considered to have some good parts and some bad parts but we are only 30 mile from London.

I am personally moving to Florida next year as I am fed up with being financially raped by the government. If you are a hard working person move somewhere else.

If you want everything for free and don't intend to work then UK is the place for you sadly.

I cant think why people want to live in the UK, I know there are places who have wars and stuff but put them aside there are many nicer places to live. Take it from me I have a very good lifestyle but abroad I can live like a King!

Shropshire is a beautiful county. Home of the Industrial Revolution, Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge - a world heritage site.

Lovely countryside too. Has it's rough areas like anywhere else (avoid Telford).

Otherwise go for the south west. Somerset/Dorset. Lyme Regis is a wonderful place.

On average 2 degrees warmer than the rest of the UK, rarely very hard frosts or snow.

But why the UK? Generally life sucks.......

York is the best place to live in the country. I have never met a person who dislikes it. It is not a huge big scary city but is very close to Leeds, it is not a small parochial town either. Loads going on, loads to great bars and restaurants and shops. Fantastic people- salt of the earth. everything is fantastic. The north is way better than the south, ok london is cool to visit but not to live. The North is fab and york is the best place to live up north.

just in case you are interested i'm from the south west midlands (welsh border)

I would recommend Ely (Cambridgeshire), which is a beautiful small city, one of the smallest cities in the UK and very clean. It's 20 miles from Cambridge (also a beautiful city, and with a thriving local economy, but very expensive to live in), about 15 mins on the train.

It's also on a main rail line to London Kings Cross, trains take an hour on one of the most reliable lines in the country.

(Avoid the Ely near Cardiff, which by all accounts is horrible.)

York (in England, 200 miles north of London for anyone who diesn't know): it's beautiful and historic. The people are all friendly and it's not too expensive to live in. There are moors, countryside and beaches nearby. The healthcare, education and job opportunities are all great. And perhaps the best aspect is how good the fish and chips taste!

There is a minor drawback if you're black, Asian or Oriental-looking: virtually everyone there is white, so you might stand out (they're not racist or anything, it's just that most immigrants move to the biggest cities and their children stay there). On the other hand, you can bring some multiculturalism to the area!

By the way, I'm not saying this because it's my hometown: I'm from London and I genuinely think it's the best place in the UK I've been to.

Oh, and I would advise you not to move to the south-east because they're all chavs.

Mostly depends on what you're going for. Are you going legally?

If it's legal. Go to Bath. One of the top ciities in the UK. Plenty of part time work.

I actually don't know where you should move. I like London personally but its pricey. If I had to move to any where in the uk in would be london.

But personally I can't wait to get out of the UK.
2006-12-12 13:49:35 UTC
I would say London.

But what would I know?

I've only been here 60 years.

There are more inbound visitors here than anywhere.

St Kilda is rather pleasant all year round.

Come to Cornwall, my 'andsome!

It's a nice place to live--lots of beaches, it's fairly rural but has several large towns, and there is lots of countryside to relax in.

But then I'm biased, I live there! :)

Hey Lino, I really wouldn't bother at the moment. Stay in Italy.

There is too much 'bad stuff' going on at the moment. People are really down on immigrants right now. Any foreigner is likely to face the same abuse and distrust. Whether their intentions are good or not.

I truly want to see the back of people moving to this country just to see what they can screw out of us, as quickly as they can.

There are too few jobs at the moment even for the British ourselves.

It is fast becoming the envy of every city in England due to its style, sophistication and down to earth attitude.

There is PLENTY of work and the crime is NOTHING compared to London.

Go on. You will not regret it.

just stay clear of big cities they are full of crime to much traffic and to expensive . more and more brits are trying to leave this country than ever before that should tell you something.
2006-12-11 09:46:37 UTC
Yes London is far too expensive to live in.. I live about 35 miles North of London in the county of Bedfordshire, but would highly recommend the following place: St Albans [ in Herfortshire inthe South East of England] nice history, lively night life, night countryside, good work prospects and only about 25 miles from London / 35 minutes by train]

http://www.stalbans.gov.uk/

Forget Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, Coventry, Glasgow, Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesborough.. they have high crime rates and low employment..

You could also consider: Warwick and Leamington Spa [in Warwickshire in the Midlands area of Enlgand].. shakespeare country
