Right now I live in Birmingham in England, but want to move somewhere in Cornwall although I don't yet know where. I want to live there only for about a year, how should I go about this? I do have family over there but don't want to stay with them. I want to rent a room or apartment, though I don't want to rent somewhere for a year, but sign for a few months, find a job, and then continue paying each month. I'm only 17 though, where would be easiest to move? To find a job? And how should I go about it all? x

You can do a short let for a flat which runs up to 6 months, but you would still have to pay a month's rent in advance and pay the rent every month thereafter. You also cannot guarantee you will receive all your deposit back either, even though deposits must now be kept in a deposit protection scheme.

If you try to obtain a flat through a Lettings Agency they will do a credit check on you, if the check does not pass then you cannot rent a property, you would have to have a Guarantor vouch for you and promise to pay if you default on rent. You also need to consider the other bills you would have to pay, council tax, water rates, gas and electric bills. Also be realistic that you may never find a job.

Perhaps you can look into Youth Hostels in the area which will allow you to pay a manageable rent on a weekly basis. You could look at a house or flat share, but most Landlords would still require a month's rent in advance.

I think you need to think about this in more detail before you consider moving far away and ensure you have a good lump sum of money to tide you over before you relocate. Monthly rent for a studio flat in Cornwall would be around £300 excluding bills etc so you would probably need at leat £500 per month to live on. You should give yourself at least 4-6 weeks to find and secure a job. I think you would need £1200 to start you off.

You can't sign a contract until you are 18, so that makes life more difficult..... rentals are for 6 months minimum ( by law) and most are for 12 months....so your options are, get someone else to sign for you as ganantee, take on a 6 month rental, then it depends on if your landlord allows month on month, most will not.........the other option is live in on the job work....such as working in a restaurant and live in.

Look at where you are hoping to move to, search for nearest town and agencies in that area or who cover that area and register, look at the jobsite jobs in that area online, but your BEST resource is your family ask...there will be local adverts, local newspapers, and jobs that they just have heard about....like so and so is taking on extra staff for the summer........................ then it is a case of getting on a coach/train and going down there.

I did that once Molly, from Aston to Padstow.

Cornwall is great in the summer season, but that's when rents

are expensive, wages are poor & work is very scarce

especially out of season, there are lots of care homes in

Cornwall if your qualified, lots of people retire to Cornwall,

so it goes from expensive in the summer to

Gods waiting room in the winter.

My advice is to have a good think about it first, I would say

Cornwall is a good place to visit (holiday)

but not to live, it certainly don't have all facilities and

entertainment that Brum has.

Me? I now live in Thailand, absolutely love it,

and no, I aint never coming back!

Cornwall i know quite well seeing as i lived and stayed there many times. as you may well know it takes time to fit in with the locals who see others as outsiders and strangers. once you get to know them you have friends for life...Work there is sparse. I'd recommend trying to make a start in the east as like Truro or Bude. further west you go harder things can be for what you want unless it's seasonal work and then almost anywhere for that short period you can get a job if get in fast enough as in 1st come 1st served. Well i hope this has helped in some way. i wish you the best there for future, If you get to st Ives might end up bumping into me, it's a real way out magical place :) give it a look sometime come what may regards

spareroom dot cow dot ukay is a good site. as for where, it's all the same for lack of work. The common sense says stay with your family there until you decide what to do. Or just pack a suitcase and hope for the best. My suggestion would be to stay where you are until you have made your mind up and make better plans than ask here babes.
