What do the little circles and squares on UK road signs mean?

I believe these are usually found on the green motorway signs.

They are known as tactical diversion route signs. They are used when the Motorway is blocked.



Motorway signs are blue

A road signs are green

Motorway signs in the UK are blue not green...green signs are for A roads...

If they are black symbols with a yellow background, they show emergency diversion routes for motorway and other main road traffic.



If they have "HR" in the square, they show "Holiday Route".

The round circles are warning signs and the square ones are guide signs. Hope this helps :)
