There are three names because it is three different things:



Great Britain is an island, it is often just called Britain.



England is one of the three countries that are on the island of Great Britain...the other two are Wales and Scotland.



When we add in the country of Northern Ireland we become The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland...often referred to as the UK.
