I've heard it online and I just thought "what? seriously" In America people wear hoodies almost year round. When I go to school I honestly think at least half of any given room is wearing hoodies at all times. The few uk things I did see in defense of hoodies were for in the rain. In America I think it's like ,shorts in the summer, hoodies Oct. - Nov., then something insulated in the winter. What do they wear in the uk from fall to winter? I seriously wear hoodies all the time, half the time just cuz I like the way it looks, not cause it's raining. Just wanted to hear from anyone across the pond if this was actually true, and to get some rationale on why it is.

I think you might have been reading some media content dating back to 5-10 years ago when there was a general scare in the UK about this clothing style and its cultural association with a section of society that newfangled anti-social behaviour legislation was created to cope with. It's true that kids/teens were worse behaved for a while and those who did all dressed in a remarkably similar style which always involved a hooded top and tracksuit bottoms. Nowadays the teens aren't dressing that uniformly and they are also not playing up as badly as in those years of the early-mid 00s. So the hoods don't intimidate as much now.

Hoodies do many bad things.

The other day it was sunny and I was sitting in the park. An old man was having some fish and chips. A few moments later about 4 drunken hooded yobs came out of the bushes each with a can of beer in their hands. The first thing they did is kick this little kids football over the park fence and swear and insult his dad.

Next they saw the old man, and started to insult him saying things like Hello grand dad you old @#'#* for absolutely no reason. They then started grabbing handfuls of his fish chips and patting him on the face. Then they started shaking up their beer cans and spraying lager at him You could see the poor old guy was agitated and just wanted to be left alone. They took his cap and started passing it around and his wooden walking stick which they managed to break. He was yelling leave me alone and they started throwing chips at him. They finally left when he was reduced to tears. Swearing at people they passed by.

What do these people get out of it? They didn't rob him they just wanted to humiliate and upset they guy and other innocent people in the park. I really wanted to stop them but they probably had knives.

In the UK a lot of places ban the wearing of hoodies.

Well, no, and yes.

I and probably most people own and wear hoodies, however in Britain we have many gangs of scum who love to stand around the most boring places (bus stops, outside shops), drinking and starting fights with random strangers passing by, and they nearly always are wearing their hoods up. They all walk the same, talk the same, act the same, and wear the same clothes.

For example, you, especially being American, if you were to walk down a street near a gang of these hoodies, for NO REASON ATALL, they would come over to you, get in your face, berate you, and then beat the $hit out you, probably sucker punch you first, if you tried putting up the good fight which is pointless because you'll nearly always be hopelessly outnumbered, you will probably end up getting stabbed, they will spit on you and while they are beating you to the ground, you can almost guarantee one will be filming it With his mobile laughing, then one will probably urinate on you. They are scum, and we have them in untold numbers across Britain, Americans don't know what Britain is like, they think of violence and fights in Britain and laugh at the thought, but from what i remember, we are one, if not thee worst in Europe for violent crime and binge drinking. Many Americans see what they are shown on American TV shows and think that is what its like, but until you come over here, you have no idea. haha

That being said, we are mostly great people, and i wouldn't want to be anywhere els. :)

We also wear hoodies. We are only cautious around groups of people wearing them as it is a stereotypical gang. However, people like me think they are just pathetic morons who contribute nothing to civilisation and are just bullies that run and cry when hit.

I wear hoodies every day of my life (except Wednesdays, that's No-Hoodie Day). It isn't that people are scared of people wearing hoodies, it's that older people think that everyone wearing a hoodie is a chav- which of course we aren't.

It's an unfortunate fact that the majority of those who wear "hoodies " are "gobshites",which is unfortunate to the remainder of those who wear them for the right reasons, and not in the cowardly way the "gobshites " wear them .

You are taking it too literally. It's generic terminology for a group of youths - admittedly the majority of whom, will be wearing hoodies.

I also wear hoodies - are they scared of me? I would suggest they are probably a lot more scared of me, than I am of them!

No. In fact, youths with their hoods over their heads on a warm summer's day look more ridiculous than intimidating.
