There is no "becoming" about it - America IS and always has been a lot more prudish than the UK. They also have higher rates of teenage pregnancy, abortions, STI's and eating disorders as well as greater demand for plastic surgery amongst teenagers. By studying 14 different nations we have concluded that there is a connection between these negative effects and being prudish.

I think Britain is becoming less prudish. In the ten years between us conducting two surveys (2001-2011) little had changed regarding the percentages viewing Naturism as either harmless or sensible (90%) and those who thought it was disgusting or criminal (9%). However, the number who described themselves as Naturists or nudists have increased 3-fold such that we now estimate that there are 3.7 million of us in the UK alone!

The press in this country are also moving away from the tiresome nudge-nudge, wink-wink style of reporting to a better, more sensible, approach. We still get occasional bad reporting, but most are Ok. A great improvement over a few years ago.

We have some way to go when it comes to sex education, but we have come on leaps and bounds regarding the acceptance of the sexual orientation of others. I believe America is yet to follow.

Curiously, America produces more porn than the UK, but then it has been shown that a puritanical (prudish) upbringing causes boys to have a greater interest in porn. I prefer the more relaxed, open and honest approach that is Naturism.

As a US citizen I'd have to say more prudish. We have sex education classes that barely teach about sex, we have actual laws that get put in place regarding personal clothing style with punishments for violations, naturism/nudism continues to be viewed as a fringe lifestyle that's barely legal and faces additional legislation and protests from religious groups all the time, nudity continues to be the great taboo that everyone loves to see yet everyone hates to see, and despite advances in acceptance of various sexual orientations those advances continue to bring out very vocal groups that try to suppress it. It seems logical reasoning and a live-and-let-live attitude are dead and rotting in this country.

In terms of sex, nudity and so on the US still seems to be bizarrely prudish. They would rather show extreme violence on TV than a nipple. There also still seems to be a mainstream which is rather anti-gay, although there is also a growing acceptance of gay rights amongst others.

Clothing styles seem pretty much identical in both countries.

The US is and will continue to be more "prudish" when it comes to the issues you've mentioned

Its unclear from your question, but I sincerely hope you don't mean to suggest that we Brits are not sexually educated or tolerant of homosexuals. It is plainly obvious that in these respects, the US is a long way behind the UK and if you believe otherwise, you clearly haven't spent time in either country

I have a lot more experience with visiting continental Europe than with the UK. I assume the UK attitudes are maybe a step behind, but still way ahead of the attitudes here in the US. Unfortunately, I think the aversion to nudity is worse now here than when I was young. And most Americans are still really screwed up when it comes to sex. Not all of us, mind you, but maybe most.

You can say what you like on UK TV after 9.00 and chat shows are not rehearsed or scripted.

The US is far far more prudish. The UK has topless girls in national newspapers and no-one cares - google 'Page 3 girl's. We are much more tolerant. In America they banned gays from the scouts, WTF ??!! We have less religious nutters and more open views.
