French is always done in secondary schools. A lot of schools do both french and Spanish. French and Spanish are the most common and that's what I did in school. Some schools do German and some do Russian.

In numbers goes French, German, Spanish (NOT JUST SOME GERMAN, as another said!) Very little Italian is taught, often in schools funded partly by the Italian govt. to teach the often 2-3rd generation Italian community, in places. Mandarin is gaining in popularity. Urdu is an option, in some places, as are some other languages, spoken by some students, at home.
Spanish was often traditionally taught, in many of our RC secondaries, in parts of the country.

My school does French and German and for the top sets (smarter kids) they do either French and German with Spanish.
But I know some Grammar schools which also do Chinese-Mandarin and Italian and such.
But usually French, German and Spanish.

i'd wager French is the main elementary yet I dont think of any languages are accepted - all and sundry knows the Brits attitude to distant places language is to talk loudly and slowly in English.
