Theoretically no, but with the increased security these days, you will need an acceptable proof of identification with a photograph, so a passport is the only document guaranteed to get you through at any airport on any airline. Check with your airline what other forms of ID are acceptable to them.

Technically you don't want a passport. You're going to require govt issued photographic identification for all airlines on inside/home flights. This is in most cases a passport or photograph card drivers licence. Examine with the airline you might be flying with what identity they'll be given.

Ryan Air require a valid passport. The others will accept any form of photographic ID. No ID of any sort is required for rail travel. When planning to fly internally in the U.K. rather than taking the train with an advance purchase ticket, have you taken into account the time and cost of travelling between city centres and airports, check in times, and on ' budget' airlines extra charges like, taxes, credit card charges and luggage charges. Beware particularly of the airline Flybe, who will charge you £40 extra at check in for anything other than a small piece of hand luggage.

Legally, no. But most airline companies want to see your passport anyway so I would check with the company as it's more common to need your passport.

In the UK we do not have state issued ID like in Europe.
