A little out of date for the costs maybe, but extremely good details pros cons costs and links written by someone who has actually done it here http://www.import-car.info/import-a4.pdf

Frankly you have to REALLY love your US vehicle !!.

- import duties and taxes could be as much as 30% of the value of the car (there are exemptions though)

- the steering wheel is on the wrong side of course (try overtaking or even just paying a toll/car par park ticket !)

- You'll need work done on it to make it UK legal (e.g. new headlamps so they 'dip' to the left)

- Insurance will be more expensive

- US cars are often gas guzzlers, this may be OK when you pay $2.60 a gallon, but it's real consideration when you're paying over $6.50

It will usually cost around $5000-$7000 but if there are import taxes then it is definitely not worth it because they are waaaayyyy too much.

You can bring the car to a mechanic and ask them if the car meets the UK motor standards.

Hope this helps!

shipping costs aside..have you any idea what the running costs of an American "Gas Guzzler" would be in the UK..Gas, as you yanks call it (Petrol) is almost $4 a litre (or liter) in the States its less than half that for a Gallon(even though your gallons are made up of 8 pints, your pints are only 16fl oz, (in UK they are 20fl oz) its still a lot of money to run a car that will only do 4 miles to a litre.

At least $5000 for shipping plus the 30% import duty. Unless it is a classic vintage car it's not worth it
