It's just a simple envelope with a letter in it. Would I use 3 stamps? Also, is going to the post office required or is it possible to just send it out of a mailbox?
Thank you!

What kind of stamps? The international letter rate for postage is $1.10
I assume you are talking about the standard "forever" stamp. This is what most people have for everyday postage. These are worth 46 cents each at current rates. So you would need to put 3 on and then you can just drop it in the mail like a normal letter.
The post office also has a "global forever" stamp that is worth the exact rate of $1.10. It's big and round an looks like a globe. You only need one of these.
They also make postage stamps in about ever denomination you can think of. If you had a bunch of 10 cents stamps you could put eleven of them on your letter. Or any other combination of stamps as long as it adds up to at least $1.10

It is not the NUMBER of stamps that it is required - it is the VALUE of the stamps.
That will depend on the size of the letter - the weight of the letter - how you want to send it (air mail or surface) .
No one can give you an accurate answer without seeing the letter - take it to your local post office where they will weigh it and then sell you the correct VALUE stamps (which may be one, two, three or even four depending on what values they have in stock)

International mail is $1.10 for the first ounce for a normal sized letter.
It's possible to just send it out, but I'd take it to the post office myself.

Go to USPS.com and you can figure out the postage amount for the letter you're mailing. It's fairly simple.
