Despite some of the answers you've received, there is *no such area code* as 0207 or 0208.

The area code for London is 020.

The rest of the number is either 8xxx xxxx or 7xxx xxxx.

You can tell this by trying to dial one London number from another. Even if your number starts with 8, you *still need to dial the 8* for another number within the 'outer zone'.

And conversely, if you're on an 8 number and you want to dial one in 7, you *don't* need to dial 0207: you can just dial 7.

Try it, honestly.

Anyway, to answer the question, there are two main styles of numbers in the UK. Most geographical numbers are in the format:

01234 123456

However, larger cities (Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow) are in the format:

0151 123 4567

And London, as I mentioned above, is in the format:

020 8888 8888

Mobile numbers all start with 07:

07123 456789

British phone numbers have 11 digits and start with a zero.

The area code is 3-5 digits at the start. Big cities have shorter ones than smaller places and often start 011. Then the individual number. Mostly within an area code the numbers start with the same or similar digits, adn you can tell where someone is dialling from often by their number - eg from a council or an inner city.

We usually write them (0191) 9274690 (this in not a real number though it would be in Newcastle if it was and we don't always use brackets.)

The dialling codes are often in alpla order

012... is a town beginning with A or B

015 is an L

019 is a W or Y

when dialling internally you have an area code which are usually 4 Digits long number like 01924, and then the number like111111, so it would be 01924111111. (when you are in that area when dailing from a land line an area code doesnt need to be inputed) and then mobile/cell numbers start 07. then when you are dialling to the uk from from outside you knock off the 0 and replace it with 44 so instead of 01924111111 it will be 441924111111. and also the telephone numbers landline or mobile are all 11 Digits long.

First - international prefix (such as plus 44)

Then local code (3 or 4 numbers)

Lastly, the actual phone number (usually 6 digits)

Like this

44 0000 111111
