Question:
What's the friendliest small city, town, or village in which to live in England or Wales or Scotland?

By small city, I mean less than half a million people in the city.

By friendly, I mean residents who *overall* are fairly friendly (not insular), fairly easy access to buses and/or trains, easy access to shops, fairly quiet (for example, no mine or factory whistles going off throughout the day or night), reasonably low crime rate, not rank with air pollution, friendly to adults who must use a frame.

I've no close family and am returning home to the UK after many years abroad (and returning disabled after a car accident), so anywhere at all in the UK you wish to list, I'll have an open mind :)

Thanks!

Ilfracombe in devon. I went there and there was hardly anyone about. Its a very quiet secluded place to be. It has lovely scenery and views, and is a haven for peace and quiet.

I would definitely say it has a low crime rate. You may have to drive a bit of a way out to get to the nearest shops, because ilfracombe is a very small village and doesnt have many shops, but i think Devon in England is a nice place to be.

Well i've got to be biased and say my hometown of Lossiemouth in the north east of Scotland. All the locals are really friendly, and it is quite a picturesque place - there are 2 beaches, a marina, harbour, a villagey bit with quirky cottages (built by my ancertors i may add!) and plenty walks (although i know that is not necessarily what you are looking for). Transport is pretty good with regular buses to the nearest city, Elgin, and is only 5 miles away from the nearest train station. It is fairly quiet, apart from the slight annoyance of jets from the RAF base. Hmmm, it's the only thing that really spoils it!

Holyhead is not owrth even considering miles from anywhere the only thing you will see are lorries and cars leaving the place pretty quick. They do not even have a book shop!

Try Horsham. The people are pretty friendly - good access to the shops. It is expensive to live here but there are no whistles goiong off etc.

I had a lovely holiday in Kirkbymoorside on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors a couple of years ago, and I thought that was a pleasant friendly little place.

You can find crime statistics at www.crimestatistics.org.uk

I wouldn't say that a city with half a million people was small!
