You can go for low level, relatively flat, walks alongside the lakes or, with the proper equipment, go fell-walking. There are thousands of options.
You can go for boat cruises on Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater and Derwentwater.
Kendal and Keswick are quite interesting small towns to visit. Both have museums.
There is an impressive waterfall at Aira Force, near the west bank of Ullswater.
There are various National Trust properties some of which are connected to Beatrice Potter or William Wordsworth.
Hawkshead village and Tarn Hows are popular places to visit.
There is the South Lakes Wildlife Park near Dalton-in-Furness.
If you like shopping then there is the headquarters of Lakeland Limited in Windermere, just next to the railway station.
Ambleside is a tourist hotspot with plenty of shops.
Grisedale Forest between Windermere and Coniston has mountain bike and walking routes plus sculptures in the forest.
You can drive over the various mountain passes such as Kirkstone Pass from near Windermere over the tops to Ullswater. The drive from Penrith to Keswick is breathtaking and gives you a real flavour of the scenery.
You could even sample outdoor pursuits such as rock-climbing and canoeing.
