climb the fells! ones i would really reccomend are the catbells above derwent water by keswick, the views over derwent water are stunning and will give you a real flavour of the lakeland scenery. skiddaw is an excellent climb too as it is one of the highest mountains in england at over 3000 feet and the views across the lake district and across the solway firth to scotland are stunning, a must on a clear day.

Spend some time in Windermere - and take a lake trip. Very touristy but well done.

Visit lakeland shop at top of hill next to station. They have a surprisingly good restauarant for lunch.

Travel around the other lakes - grasmere, Coniston.

If you walk buy a local guide book and try some.

Visit Keswick, Kendal, Hawkshead.

In most villages parking is difficult but you can park in supermarket car parks for a couple of hours as long as you buy something.

People go to the Lake District for the stunning scenery.

You can go for low level, relatively flat, walks alongside the lakes or, with the proper equipment, go fell-walking. There are thousands of options.

You can go for boat cruises on Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater and Derwentwater.

Kendal and Keswick are quite interesting small towns to visit. Both have museums.

There is an impressive waterfall at Aira Force, near the west bank of Ullswater.

There are various National Trust properties some of which are connected to Beatrice Potter or William Wordsworth.

Hawkshead village and Tarn Hows are popular places to visit.

There is the South Lakes Wildlife Park near Dalton-in-Furness.

If you like shopping then there is the headquarters of Lakeland Limited in Windermere, just next to the railway station.

Ambleside is a tourist hotspot with plenty of shops.

Grisedale Forest between Windermere and Coniston has mountain bike and walking routes plus sculptures in the forest.

You can drive over the various mountain passes such as Kirkstone Pass from near Windermere over the tops to Ullswater. The drive from Penrith to Keswick is breathtaking and gives you a real flavour of the scenery.

You could even sample outdoor pursuits such as rock-climbing and canoeing.

I have just given you a mere taste of some of the things you can do.

As regards accommodation there are static caravans, pine lodges, cottages, bed and breakfast places and hotels of varying quality.

a mess of issues incredibly. Birdwatching (see the ospreys or taken in England's very last last golden eagle), mountain climbing (a mess of places to do this, plus an excellent mountain climbing wall in Kendal), cycling (if you're a prepared bike proprietor, look on the Fred Whitton challenge), fishing (lots of lakes and tarns in case you get the right enables), golf (some large classes), horseriding, warm air ballooning, mountain cycling (attempt Grizedale), off roading, images, operating (attempt the Brathay Windermere Marathon or quite some the numerous fell races), buying, snowboarding (at advance, or Kendal Ski club), swimming (large North Swim at Windermere), watersports, vacationing attractions, etc. etc. etc.

If you like cold, wet and boring its your kinda place. Also almost everything is cooked in lard (solid animal fat), so if indigestion and burpings your thing, you'll be crazy for the place.
