If you still had your child passport you could do it as a renewal, but this is going to have to be a first adult application. "A long time ago" is far too long to report the loss to the police and try it as a renewal that way.
https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-adult-passport is the place to start and you will need your full birth certificate showing parents' names, mother or father's full UK birth certificate, and if you use your father's birth certificate, your parents' marriage certificate (because when you were born, unmarried fathers didn't count for passing on UK citizenship). If any of those are UK certificates but have gone missing, you can order replacements from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ for England and Wales or http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/bdm.html for a Scottish one - use form SU3.
If you are not in the UK, start here https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports
