To give some idea of how much difference there is between north and south:



In the far north west of Scotland, on Lewis, in late June the sun sets just before midnight, the patch of light sky moves around the north horizon and the sun comes up again soon after 3am. It never really gets dark. In January it is pitch black at 9am and pitch black again by 4pm and never all that light.



In London the latest sunset is 9:20pm and the earliest sunrise is 4:40am, I can't remember it being dark much after 8am or much before 5pm. Been a while though.

The further North you go, the more the difference between day and night length becomes: From the Autumn Equinox through Winter to the Spring Equinox, night is longer, so it is longer by more in Scotland, and thus it gets dark earlier there. From the Spring Equinox through Summer to the Autumn Equinox, day is longer, and so longer by more in Scotland, and thus England gets darker earlier.

In the far North of Scotland, especially in the Shetland Islands it gets darker MUCH sooner than in the South of England.



eg. In January, there can be only 6 hours of proper daylight, but in the summer the sun barely dips below the horizon - so nearly 20 hours of good daylight.

Well it depends really which is the most north eastern tip of the uk, because of the UK longtitude and latitude points the closest tip to the north pole would go darkest first and in summer would be the exact opposite.

Well perosnally I think its a matter of East or West. As the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, it would be the east of the country that gets dark earliest. Given the tilt of the UK I would say that East Anglia gets dark first.

I live in Bexley not far from The Dartford Bridge and my daughter lives in Linlithgow nr Edinburgh in Scotland she gets approx 1hr more of daylight a day than we do ?
