UK is not a country...it is comprised of those other countries you mentioned (including Northern Ireland) London is the capital of England, one of the countries in the United Kingdom. It is also home to the King and/or Queen of the United Kingdom

Great Britain is the largest island in Europe and the political union of three countries, these being Scotland, Wales and England. Each of these three countries have a capital, London being the capital of England,Cardiff the capital of Wales and Edinburgh the capital of Scotland.

The United Kingdom (abbreviation UK), is Great Britain plus Northern Ireland.

The different Countries are separated further into other smaller bits of land called Counties. (Such as Surrey,Nottingham,Norfolk,Cornwall,Devon, etc)

No states here, none at all.

The UK is not really a country, it's a sovereign state with it's own government and military, and is as such recognized worldwide as a nation.

Great Britain is purely a geographical term, GB is the name of the island made up by England, Scotland and Wales.

England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are constitutional countries, Wales, strictly speaking, is not a country, but a principality. Scotland and Wales have a form of government for themselves, but are completely secondary to the UK government, which is in London, England.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, this is often shortened to just "UK".

The republic of Ireland, often known as southern Ireland, is completely independent from the UK in every way. Northern Ireland is part of the UK.

Are you confused enough yet?

Wales, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland are all nations. They all have their own devolved governments, all have their own sports teams, and are all completely different!

United Kingdom is the name for the grouping of all these countries.

Ireland, Wales and Scotland are all Celtic countries. England then one by one took over these countries, and ruled them with cruelty, trying to get rid of their languages and cultures. The Scottish Gaelic language is now dead as a result. Irish is nearly dead. Welsh is the only one that's still really spoken. The South of Ireland won independence through war in the 1920s. But because the North was half Irish, half English, they stayed in the UK.

They're deffinately not states. They have far more importance than states. Scotland and Wales are both trying to get independence.

Ok, Lots of confusion here.

The UK is NOT a Country. The UK is a Sovereign State, consisting of four countries:

England

Northern Ireland (Not North Ireland as a couple of people are stating)

Scotland

Wales

Likewise, Great Britain is not a country:

England, Scotland and Wales all lie on an Island called Great Britain (Or Britain for Short) - So therefore, Britain is an Island.

Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland lie on the island of Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland, as its name suggests, is a Republic, and has nothing to do with Britain or the UK (Different laws, Currency, Government etc)

EDIT:

Lord Oxford: The Capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast.

Dublin is the Capital of the Republic of Ireland.

Also - Wales more popularly recognised as a Country, and not a Principality.
